Monkey's Tree Service climber in hi-vis and helmet on the job
Roanoke & Salem, since 2019

Ten years in the trees of the Roanoke Valley.

Philip Divers runs Monkey's Tree Service out of Southwest Roanoke, with a second location in Salem. The work is mostly the jobs other crews pass on.

Climbing is the difference.

A bucket truck can only quote what it can reach. Most of the trees that actually need to come out around here are behind a house, over a deck, or down a slope where no lift is going. A trained climber gets to those on rope and takes them apart from the top down — which is why we can quote jobs that get declined elsewhere, and why the price does not balloon just because access is bad.

What the certifications actually mean.

Credentials in this trade get listed like decoration, so here is what they are for. ISA is the International Society of Arboriculture — the body that sets the standards for how cuts are made and how trees are assessed. EHAP is electrical hazard awareness training, which is what keeps a crew alive near a service drop. Aerial rescue training means that if a climber is hurt sixty feet up, the person on the ground can actually get them down. None of it is decorative.

Insured, and glad to prove it.

We carry liability insurance and send the certificate before work starts. This is the most important thing to check on any tree company and the one homeowners check least. If an uninsured crew puts a limb through your roof or gets hurt in your yard, you are the one holding it. Ask us. Ask the other two quotes as well.

Standards

Four things we will not do

Every trade has its shortcuts. These are the ones we have decided against, and you are welcome to hold us to them.

01

We do not top healthy trees.

It is still the most requested and most damaging cut in this trade. If size is the problem there are proper reduction cuts. We will show you the difference rather than just take the money.

02

We do not quote a removal you do not need.

Plenty of trees people are frightened of are structurally fine, and plenty of problems are a deadwood cleanout rather than a removal. We would rather tell you that and be the company you call for the next twenty years.

03

We do not start without you seeing the insurance.

You get the certificate before we show up. Ask everyone who quotes you for it.

04

We do not fell large wood over structures.

It comes down on rope, in pieces the rigging and the crew can control. That is slower, and it is the entire reason we can work over a roof at all.

Rather than pick our own favourite quotes, read them where you can see every one of them.
