Old neighborhoods, old trees, very little room.

Old Southwest, Raleigh Court, Wasena, South Roanoke and Grandin Village were platted with narrow lots and planted with trees that are now eighty to a hundred years old. A mature white oak or tulip poplar on a fifty-foot lot has a canopy over the house, the neighbor's house, the alley and a power drop all at once. Nothing about that is a felling job. It is why the majority of our city work is climbing and rigging rather than dropping trees, and why we own the ropes to do it.

What we see failing here.

Silver maples planted en masse in the mid-century neighborhoods are now at the age where they shed large limbs -- weak wood, included bark unions, and a lot of them over driveways. Tulip poplars go tall and brittle and lose tops in wind. Bradford pears split down the middle almost on schedule around year twenty. And ash trees across the valley have been killed by emerald ash borer; a standing dead ash gets more dangerous and more expensive to remove every year it waits, because the wood punks out and it stops being safe to climb.

Slopes, alleys and access.

Anything on the grades running up toward Mill Mountain or Chestnut Ridge has an access problem before it has a tree problem. Half of quoting a Roanoke job accurately is knowing whether a lift can get to the trunk, whether the alley is passable, and where the wood can be staged without blocking a neighbor. Send us a photo of the side yard and the gate along with the tree and the quote gets a lot more accurate.
