Felling is the easy version. Almost nothing in a Roanoke back yard qualifies.
If a tree stands in open ground with two tree-lengths of clear space in the direction it needs to fall, it can be cut at the base and dropped. That is a fast, cheap job and we are happy to do it. But most residential trees in Roanoke and Salem are hemmed in -- house on one side, fence on the other, a shed and a power drop in between. Dropping those is not an option, so the tree comes apart from the top down.
How a rigged removal actually goes.
A climber ascends on rope and works down the tree in sections. Limbs and trunk pieces get tied off to a rigging line running through a block, and the ground crew lowers each piece under control to a set drop zone. Nothing free-falls. The pieces are cut small enough that the rigging and the crew can hold them, which is why a big removal over a house takes a full day rather than an hour -- and why it does not cost you a roof.
What happens to the wood.
Your call, and it changes the price. We can haul everything off and leave the yard clean, cut the trunk into rounds and stack them if you burn wood, or chip the brush on site and leave the chips for your beds. Tell us at the quote and it gets built into the number instead of showing up as a surprise line item.

What drives the price
Anyone who quotes a tree over the phone without seeing it is guessing, and the guess runs high to protect them. Here is what actually moves the number, so you can judge any quote you get — including ours.
Size and species
A 90-foot oak is a different job from a 30-foot dogwood. Height, trunk diameter and wood density all drive the hours.
Access
If we can get a lift to the trunk, the job goes faster and costs less. A tree behind a fence in a back yard has to come out piece by piece on ropes.
What is underneath
A tree over open lawn can be felled. A tree over your roof, deck, pool or the neighbor's fence has to be rigged down in controlled sections.
Utilities
Anything near primary power lines takes extra setup, extra care and sometimes a call to the utility first.
Cleanup level
Haul everything away, leave the wood cut for your stove, or chip the brush and leave the chips -- your call, and it changes the number.
Stump
Grinding the stump is priced separately from the removal, so you can add it or skip it.

01Do you need to get equipment into my back yard?+
Not always. If there is a gate we can fit a tracked lift through, the job goes faster and costs less. If there is not, we climb it -- that is the whole point of having a climber rather than just a bucket truck. Send a photo of your gate and side yard with the rest and we will tell you which it is.
02Will your crew damage my lawn?+
We lay out the drop zone deliberately and put down protection where equipment has to travel. Heavy rounds get moved rather than rolled across turf. Some scuffing is possible on soft ground after rain, and if that matters to you, say so -- sometimes the right answer is waiting a few dry days.
03Is the stump included?+
No, stump grinding is quoted separately so you can decide whether you want it. Plenty of people take the tree now and the stump later.
